Climate Records
The Meteorological Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network keeps the climate records of the Network: the observations of every station, checked and archived, and the summaries compiled from them by month, season and year. The records are the means by which the weather of any period can be compared with what is usual, and they are the basis on which the Office judges whether a month was warm or cold, wet or dry.
The Office inherited three series from the member organisations that operated stations before its establishment. The longest, at Central Exchange, begins in January 2004 and is used as the provisional reference for the Network until longer series exist. The remaining stations were brought onto the common programme during the transition period, which began on 10 August 2026.
August 2026. The figures below are the Office's provisional summary of the last full month before establishment. They will be confirmed in the monthly summary published in October 2026.
- 18.4 °C
- Mean temperature at Central Exchange, 0.6 °C above the 2004 to 2025 average
- 61 mm
- Rainfall at Central Exchange, 92 per cent of the 2004 to 2025 average
- 178 h
- Sunshine at Central Exchange, close to the average for August
- 74 km/h
- Highest gust of the month, at Harbour Head on 23 August
August 2026 was a little warmer than usual and slightly drier. A warm spell between 10 and 14 August brought the highest temperatures of the month at every station on 12 August. The month's heaviest rain fell on 23 August, when a deep low crossed the Network and gave the highest gust of the month at Harbour Head; 28 mm fell at Northgate Relay in twelve hours. The last week was cool and settled, with the lowest temperatures of the month on 28 and 29 August.
| Station | Mean temperature | Highest | Lowest | Rainfall | Period of record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Central Exchange | 18.4 °C | 29.1 °C on 12 August | 9.6 °C on 28 August | 61 mm | Full month |
| Northgate Relay | 17.6 °C | 28.4 °C on 12 August | 8.2 °C on 28 August | 68 mm | Full month |
| Southbank Terminal | 18.9 °C | 27.5 °C on 12 August | 11.3 °C on 29 August | 49 mm | Full month |
| Eastfield Campus | 18.1 °C | 28.8 °C on 12 August | 8.9 °C on 28 August | 47 mm | From 10 August |
| Ridgeway Summit | 14.2 °C | 24.0 °C on 12 August | 5.1 °C on 28 August | 71 mm | From 10 August |
| Saltmarsh | 18.7 °C | 27.0 °C on 12 August | 11.8 °C on 29 August | 33 mm | From 10 August |
Figures for Eastfield Campus, Ridgeway Summit and Saltmarsh cover only the period from 10 August, when those stations joined the common programme, and are not comparable with the full-month figures above them. Stations not shown joined the programme later in the transition and have too short a record for a monthly summary.
The series held. The table below records the length of the series held for each station. The Office adopts the convention that a reference period should be thirty years; until the network has such a period the Central Exchange series is used, and every comparison with it is marked provisional.
| Station | Series begins | Elements | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Exchange | January 2004 | Temperature, rainfall, sunshine, wind, pressure | 22 years |
| Southbank Terminal | March 2011 | Temperature, rainfall, wind, sea level | 15 years |
| Northgate Relay | June 2016 | Temperature, rainfall, wind | 10 years |
| All other stations | Between 10 August and 5 September 2026 | Surface programme | Under one year |
Publications. The Office publishes the summaries below at fixed times and announces each in the Newsroom. Figures in a summary are final unless marked provisional; a correction, when one is needed, is published with the next summary.

The Office and the Climate Department. The Office records the climate of the Network as it is observed. Advice on the climate of the future, and on the policy of the Network in response to it, is the responsibility of the Climate Department, to which the Office supplies its records and its analysis on request.
Requests for observation data are handled as described on the Observations page. Questions about the records, including the reference period and the treatment of provisional figures, may be sent to contact@meteorology.gov.vin. For the stations at which the records are made, see Stations.
