Meteorological Office Begins Regular Forecasts for the Network

The Meteorological Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network today began issuing regular forecasts. The first Network forecast was issued from the forecasting centre at Central Exchange at 05:30 this morning. The Network forecast covers the next forty-eight hours and is issued at 05:30, 11:30, 17:30 and 23:30 every day.

A five-day outlook, covering days three to seven, is issued with the 11:30 forecast. Site forecasts for the six principal sites of the Network, with hourly detail for the first twenty-four hours, are issued with every Network forecast. A coastal waters forecast for the coast between Harbour Head and Saltmarsh is issued at 05:30 and 17:30. A monthly outlook will be issued on the first Monday of each month from 5 October 2026.

Forecasts are prepared by the duty forecaster from the observations of the Office's twelve stations, its two weather radars and its upper-air soundings, and from the guidance of the Office's numerical prediction model, which runs four times daily. Every forecast is checked by a second forecaster before it is issued. The Office will compare each forecast with the weather that followed and publish verification figures monthly from October 2026.
