Twelve Stations Confirmed in the Office's Observing Network

The Meteorological Office of the Velocity Interoperability Network today confirmed the composition of its observing network. Twelve surface stations report hourly to the forecasting centre at Central Exchange: staffed synoptic stations at Central Exchange, Northgate Relay and Southbank Terminal, and automatic stations at Eastfield Campus, Westbrook Distribution Site, Meridian Court, Harbour Head, Ridgeway Summit, Fenmoor, Longwater, Kilnbridge and Saltmarsh.
Two weather radars, at Harbour Head on the coast and at Ridgeway Summit in the uplands, scan the Network every five minutes. An upper-air station at Central Exchange releases a sounding balloon at 00:00 and 12:00 daily. Sea state is observed at the three coastal stations. Together the network records 288 surface observations every day.
The stations were transferred to the Office from member organisations during the transition period between 10 August and 5 September 2026 and were brought onto a common observing programme in readiness for establishment.
